I have some random thoughts about Im'ing. First I was thinking about the inside school versus outside school use of technology. Last week I had one of my classes do the March Madness webquest from the math/science unit. Most of the boys really knew how to use the brackets and the links from the brackets to get information about the teams. It was one of the most engaging lessons I've done this year. So I felt like I was taking an interest and combining it with technology that they were familiar with and getting the students excited about math.
Second thought - the students in the reading talk about using partial sentences to keep their friends engaged. Well I often hit enter by a mistake and end up sending a partial sentence. So I was using this practive unintentially.
Third - I never heard of the * thing to correct a spelling mistake. I can't see me ever using it. It seems like too much effort
Finally - I don't think that I could ever maintain more than 2 conversations. I have a hard time when the four of us are trying to communicate in one chat.

Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI really like using the IM chat for collaboration with the group. I'm curious... Are you a fast typer? I can type pretty fast and I don't have to look down at the keys. I wonder if that makes it more enjoyable for me, because I could be looking up and reading new messages as I type. I think the thing that might make it confusing with a group is that by the time everyone response to one thought, many others have been posted in between and we sometimes have to clear up what we were responding to. As far as partial messages, when I first started using IM I ALWAYS sent partial messages, because I would press the enter bar to go to the next line and it would send the message. It took me a while to get used to that!
Mary- yes I used that webquest, but I emailed my students some other links. One was a bracket from cbssports that provided links to school information to answer the questions on the first worksheet. I also gave them a link to the wikipedia article about the history of the tournament to answer the question about past wins. So basically I had them answer the question in the quest but I gave them the links that I wanted them to use. They really enjoyed it.
