My husband has a facebook account that he originally created so that we could look at pictures that our older daughter would post there. I felt that it was inappropriate for me to open an account for all the reasons you've already stated. He has become friends with some of my old friends from high school. My friends know whether it is me or him that is talking to them without having to say so. He really enjoys reading the posts and commenting on some funny pictures.
On another note I had some students claim that they had found my "my space" account and thought it was interesting that my hobby was racing tractor trailers.
